JOINT INJECTION PROCEDURE

WHAT IS A MAJOR JOINT OR BURSAL INJECTION?

If you’re experiencing pain in your hip, shoulder, arm, or knee your doctor may recommend a major joint injection as a potential solution. This outpatient procedure involves the targeted administration of medication directly into the affected joint or its surrounding structures. This will provide much-needed relief and enhance joint function. Major joint injections serve a variety of purposes, from alleviating arthritis-related discomfort to addressing injuries or disorders.

HOW IS THE PROCEDURE PERFORMED?

The healthcare provider cleanses and sanitizes the area around the joint prior to the injection and administers a local anesthetic to effectively numb the tissue at the injection site. However, the approach to the procedure slightly differs depending on the joint being treated.

  • THERAPEUTIC JOINT INJECTION ( SHOULDER OR KNEE)

The physician skillfully guides a needle into the targeted joint, employing various needle approaches based on the specific area of treatment. To aid in needle placement, an x-ray device called a fluoroscope may be utilized. Confirming the precise positioning of the needle may involve the injection of contrast dye. Once the needle is correctly positioned, the physician administers a mixture of anesthetic and steroid medication. Subsequently, the healthcare professional slowly withdraws the needle and applies a small bandage to the injection site.

  • HIP JOINT INJECTION ( ULTRASOUND OR FLUOROSCOPIC METHOD)

During a hip joint injection, the patient lies in a supine position. The healthcare provider applies numbing medication to the skin around the hip joint and inserts a small needle through the skin into the hip joint. The physician can use ultrasound or a fluoroscope to guide the needle. In this case,  contrast dye is injected to confirm the needle’s placement within the joint. Once the needle is properly positioned, the healthcare provider administers the medication into the joint, effectively bathing it. If the pain originates from the joint, the physician may ask the patient about the sensation in the hip as the medication takes effect and request gentle movements of the hip to assess any remaining discomfort. After the injection, the healthcare provider closely monitors the patient for a brief period before allowing them to return home.

WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF MAJOR JOINT INJECTIONS?

Major joint injections, customized to address specific joints such as the shoulder, arm, knee, or hip, offer targeted relief, significantly enhancing the patient’s overall health and restoring their mobility.

For many patients, noticeable pain relief commences within two to three days of the injection. The medication continues to work over the following days, effectively reducing inflammation. In certain situations, it is necessary to repeat the procedure one or more times, to fully maximize the benefits of the treatment.
